Why stonewash

Linen bedding that's soft from the first night

Most linen is cut from fabric that was stonewashed before sewing. We do it the other way around: every duvet cover, sheet, and pillowcase is sewn first, then stonewashed. That one change is what gives our bedding its relaxed, lived-in drape and its softness from day one, with no stiff break-in period. It also means the linen is pre-shrunk, so what you measure is what you keep. Like all good linen, it only grows softer with every wash.

We work with one material, and we work with it well. Our bedding is 100% flax linen, never blended, woven at a substantial 175 g/m². The yarn comes from certified European spinning mills, and every piece is sewn, dyed, and stonewashed in the north of Portugal, in small batches by family-run ateliers.

Flax is quietly remarkable: naturally breathable and temperature-regulating, cool in summer and warm in winter. It wicks moisture, it is hypoallergenic and gentle on sensitive skin, and as a natural plant fibre it is fully biodegradable. Stronger than cotton and built to last for years, it only improves with use.

What makes stonewashed linen bedding different?

Stonewashed linen is washed during production, so the fibres soften and the weave relaxes before it ever reaches your bed. We stonewash every piece after sewing, not before, which is why Malua bedding feels soft from the first night and drapes with that lived-in look. It needs no breaking in, and it gets softer with every wash.

Is linen bedding good all year round?

Yes. Flax linen is naturally temperature-regulating, breathable and cool in summer, warm in winter, and it wicks moisture, which makes it especially comfortable for warm sleepers.

What is linen bedding made of?

What sizes does the linen bedding come in?

Duvet covers come in 140×200, 160×200, 200×200, 220×200 and 240×220 cm; fitted sheets from 90×200 to 200×200 cm; pillowcases in 50×70, 70×80 and 80×80 cm. These are continental sizes: 200×200 cm fits a UK double and 240×220 cm a UK super king. Full details are on each product page.

How do I wash and care for linen bedding?

  • We recommend washing your linen before first use.
  • Turn the piece inside out before washing.
  • Wash in the machine at 40°C max, with a mild detergent. Skip bleach and fabric softener. Both damage linen fibres.
  • Don't overload the drum. Linen likes room to move during a wash.
  • Hang to dry. Shake first to reduce creasing. Or tumble dry on a gentle cycle, stopping before fully dry.
  • You can iron if you prefer a crisper finish, though you'll lose the stonewashed, lived-in texture.
